NAUMBURG VIOLINCELLO RECITAL

Once again, Candlelight Concerts will host the young winner of the April 2001 Naumburg Competition.  The Naumburg has identified and fostered many of the fine artists we enjoy today -- Dawn Upshaw, Nadia Salerno-Sonnenberg, the Emerson Quartet, the Eroica Trio, Elmar Oliveira -- to name just a few.  This season will bring one of the potential cello greats of the future.

The winner of the April 2001 Naumburg Competition is Clancy Newman, cello.

  Clancy Newman,cello will be performing tonight with Noreen Cassidy-Polera, piano.

DANCE ENSEMBLE
Enjoy authentic Russian instruments, lively traditional village dances, and colorful costumes.  The Music Makers have appeared frequently at the Russian Embassy, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian, and Liser Auditorium.  The Washington Balalaika Society was formed in 1988 to promote the performance of  Russian, Ukrainian, & Eastern European folk music on traditional instruments.

The Ensemble turns serious music into something invitingly different.  In the hands of the Ethos, pieces that are often considered daunting on traditional instruments draw cheers from audiences.  They have even admitted to shopping at Home Depot for some of their less traditional instruments.
